CHEF
Part Time Position 20 Hours per Week
We are a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida serving those struggling with poverty and homelessness. Our heart is to make known God’s love for every person in practical and spiritual ways. The ideal candidate would approach this position with a heart for ministry and a personal commitment to the Christian values of Grace Mission. This individual must be an experienced chef; willing to work with a kitchen crew of lay volunteers to actively serve those in need; with a passion for supporting the vision of Grace Mission.
JOB OBJECTIVES
- Plan and prepare nutritious meals, using a mainly donated inventory.
- Develop a sustainable meals service program for large numbers.
- Develop a kitchen team of lay volunteers and staff in a collaborative setting.
JOB DUTIES
Safe Work Environment
- Adhere to policies and procedures established by Grace Mission.
- Work closely with the kitchen manager to maintain industry standard practices that ensure kitchen sanitation, food rotation and safety.
- Employ practices that ensure kitchen crew’s positive work experience and safety.
Kitchen Duties and Meal Service
- Work closely with the Kitchen Manager to direct the Second Harvest delivery, and select items for use in the meal plan.
- Work closely with the kitchen manager to plan nutritious menus, creating bi-weekly meal plans, using primarily donated inventory (Second Harvest, Chicken Salad Chick, Panera).
- Prepare meals averaging 100 to 120 servings (presently 3 meals per week).
- Prepare daily soup or take-out meals for clients who drop in at Grace Mission outside of regularly planned meal schedules.
- Lead a kitchen crew of lay volunteers to prepare meals and clear up.
- Plan and prepare meals for special occasions: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, July 4th.
- Ensure the kitchen is always clean at the end of meal service, and food is rotated.
- Provide beneficial and practical solutions to improving and growing the meal services program into the foreseeable future.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Training in Culinary Arts – Culinary School Diploma (preferred).
- Current Florida Food Handler’s certificate.
- Experience in large group cooking and meal preparations.
- A heart for those in need.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skill set.
- Team orientation and collaborative mindset.
- Self-disciplined and able to take initiative with guidance from the vicar.
- Emotional intelligence: patience, kindness, flexibility in an unpredictable setting, self-control, able to work under stress.
- Good physical stamina.
